General Qualifications for Admission

Applicants should fulfil the following requirements for admission:

Doctoral Degree Programmes
  1. hold the following degree or academic qualifications:
    • a Master’s degree from a recognised university; or
    • a Bachelor’s degree, normally with Second Class Honours in the upper division or above, and have been registered in a course of study for a Master’s degree at this University for at least one year and have demonstrated research ability; or
    • have been registered in a course of study for a doctoral degree at a recognised university for at least one year, and have been approved for admission by the Graduate Council.
  2. hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, or equivalent education qualifications, and/or have relevant experience as deemed acceptable;
  3. provide proof of her/his research capability in the form of past publications, Master’s thesis, and/or strong support from academic references;
  4. perform satisfactorily in an interview conducted by the Graduate Division of Education;
  5. pass a written entrance examination conducted by the Graduate Division of Education, if necessary; and
  6. fulfil the “English Language Requirements for Admission” as stipulated by the Graduate School: https://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk/admissions/admissions/requirements
Master’s Degree Programmes
Master of Philosophy
  1. hold the following degree or academic qualifications:
    • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a bachelor’s degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or
    • graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a bachelor’s degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”; or
    • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.
  2. pass an entrance examination or interview conducted by the Graduate Division of Education; and
  3. fulfil the “English Language Requirements for Admission” as stipulated by the Graduate School: https://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk/admissions/admissions/requirements
Master of Education in Teaching in Key Subject Areas (National Excellent Teacher Training Initiative)
  1. hold the following degree or academic qualifications:
    • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a bachelor’s degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class or achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”; or
    • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
  2. pass an entrance examination or interview conducted by the Graduate Division of Education, where required;
  3. Students admitted to the programme will conduct teaching practice in collaborating schools in the Mainland and therefore proficiency in Putonghua is required. Preference will be given to applicants who have obtained a degree from a university in the Mainland or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction is Putonghua. In order to be eligible to obtain teacher qualification in the Mainland after completing the programme, students should also attain Grade B, Level 2 or above in all papers in The Test of Proficiency in Putonghua conducted by the State Language Commission (國家語委的《普通話水平測試等級標準》二級乙等或以上).

MA in Professional Educational Psychology
  1. hold the following degree or academic qualifications:
    • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, normally with honours not lower than Second Class or achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”; AND
    • be eligible for Graduate Membership of The Hong Kong Psychological Society;
    • possess a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or with relevant working experience in educational or related settings are preferred;
  2. pass a written test AND an interview conducted by the Graduate Division of Education; and
  3. fulfil the “English Language Requirements for Admission” as stipulated by the Graduate School: https://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk/admissions/admissions/requirements
MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
  1. hold the following degree or academic qualifications:
    • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a bachelor’s degree in English or a related field (such as linguistics, literature and translation), normally with honours not lower than Second Class or achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”; or
    • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
  2. pass an entrance examination or interview conducted by the Graduate Division of Education, where required; and
  3. fulfil the English language requirements for admission:
    • applicants with a relevant degree from a university in Hong Kong should fulfil the English Language Requirements for Admission as stipulated by the Graduate School.
    • applicants with a relevant degree from a university outside Hong Kong should meet one of the following requirements:
      • A minimum overall score of 7.0 in IELTS with the writing score not lower than 7.0; OR
      • A minimum score of 94 in TOEFL (Internet-based) with the writing score not lower than 27.
Other Master’s Degree Programmes
  1. hold the following degree or academic qualifications:
    • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a bachelor’s degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class or achieving an average grade of not lower than “B”; or
    • completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
  2. pass an entrance examination or interview conducted by the Graduate Division of Education; and
